CIS vs. ServiceTitan Phones Pro: Why a Standalone Phone System Wins
If you run your business on ServiceTitan, Phones Pro looks like the obvious phone choice — it’s built by the same company, so it must be the best fit, right? Not necessarily. Here’s what’s actually under the hood, from someone who helped build it.
Full Disclosure: I Built This
Before starting CIS, I spent years at ServiceTitan personally onboarding hundreds of trade accounts and leading development on Phones Pro itself. I’m not guessing about how it works — I know exactly what it is and isn’t.
What Phones Pro Actually Is
Phones Pro is not a ServiceTitan-built phone system. It’s a direct integration with Dialpad, a third-party UCaaS provider, wrapped inside the ServiceTitan interface. When you buy Phones Pro, you’re really buying Dialpad, layered with a ServiceTitan skin and ServiceTitan’s markup.
That matters because you end up with two vendors in one product: ServiceTitan for the wrapper, Dialpad for everything actually happening on the call. When something breaks, good luck figuring out which side owns the problem.

Why a Standalone System Is Usually the Better Call
A roofing company we work with put it simply: if you’re going to run a phone system, you’re better off with a standalone system than with Phones Pro. Their reasoning tracked with what I saw from the inside for years:
- One accountable vendor. With CIS, one team — one person — owns your phone system end to end. No finger-pointing between two companies.
- No forced bundling. You don’t have to route every phone decision through your FSM vendor’s pricing and roadmap.
- Flexibility. CIS integrates with ServiceTitan (and Housecall Pro, Jobber, FieldEdge) without requiring you to adopt whatever phone stack they’ve bundled that quarter.
- Purpose-built AI. Native AI call handling, not an add-on layered onto a general UCaaS platform.
Side-by-Side
| ServiceTitan Phones Pro | CIS | |
|---|---|---|
| What it actually is | Dialpad, wrapped in ServiceTitan’s UI | Purpose-built trades phone platform |
| Vendor accountability | Split between ServiceTitan and Dialpad | Single point of accountability |
| FSM integration | Native to ServiceTitan only | Syncs with ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber, FieldEdge |
| Setup | Self-serve within ST settings | Personally handled, white-glove |
| AI voice agents | Bundled/limited to Dialpad’s capabilities | Native, trade-specific AI receptionist |
| Built by | A general UCaaS provider (Dialpad) | A former ServiceTitan telecom manager who did this for a living |
The Bottom Line
Phones Pro isn’t a bad product — Dialpad is a solid platform. But it’s a general-purpose phone system with a ServiceTitan wrapper, not something purpose-built for how trade businesses actually operate. If you want a standalone system built specifically for the trades, run by someone who spent years inside ServiceTitan doing exactly this, that’s CIS.
